The museum of Sergey Paradzhanov (Sarkis Paradzhanyantz), a great film director, was established by the republic goverment’s decree in 1988 after the first successful exhibiton of his works in the Folk Art Museum of Armenia. And at that time 40 works of the author have been sold and he himself has been provided with special premises in one of the buildings under construction in the ethongraphic distict”Dzoraguh”. The earthquake of 1988 suspended construction so the museum was opened only in 1991.


The basis of that collection is made by 600works of Sergey Paradzhanov including those exhibited at two exhibitions in the Folk Art Museum in 1988 and 1989 as well as by furniture pieces from the Tiflis house and his persanal belongings. The museum archive contains extensive correspodence of the film director: his letters to L.Brick, A.Tarkovski, etc. The exposition includes works of art memorial rooms, documents,photos, etc.

Sergey Pradzhanov is an author of several films-masterpieces which has brought him worldwide fame.

These are “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” (1964), “Colour of the pomegranate” or “Sayat-Nova”(1969), “The Legend of Surahm Fortress”(1985) and “Ashik-Kerib”(1988). Paradzhanov’s contribution to the art of cinematogrphy is first af all his poetic cinema language highly appreciated by his contemporaries. Besides cinema the system aesthetics also comprised plastic art where he used traditions of Armenian,Eastern and European art.

There are 250 works of Paradzhanov in the museum’s expositon - assemblages, plane and volumetric collages, drawings,puppets, sketches to his films. All of them are a result of the film director and artist’s peculiar reaction to the life and events, of his plastic perception.

Many of his works created during imprisonment: the Soviet System has kept him out of cinema for 15 years of wich 1973-1977 he spent in prisons of the old regime.

Paradzhanov’s art has no any analogs in the world art andstaggers by its fantasy, withiness and artistry. Variety of materials and objects used in works imparts to it special charm and brilliance.

The museum uses art and exposition principles of Paradzhanov himself.

In the course of six years the museum has orginized 25 exhibitins in Cannes, Salonics, Moscow, Tokio, Rome, Tehran, Beijing and many other cities.

The museum is one of the most popular and attended cultural centres of Yerevan.
